What is a Locker: The Basic Info

General Lockers Information

When purchasing lockers it is important to know exactly what you’re buying and if it’s the right locker for your requirements and work environment. Our Product Information pages are designed to provide you with all the information you need to know about specific lockers, however, on this page we aim to give you an insight into the technical jargon used to talk about lockers and the key points you need to look out for when making your purchase.

What is a locker?

Firstly, let’s address what is a locker. We define a locker as essentially being a small cupboard with a single compartment or with multiple compartments that is lockable. You will usually find them in schools, leisure centres and changing rooms as well as in public spaces such as railway stations and theme parks. They come in many forms and guises but they all share the same basic features which we will discuss in detail below.

The Basic Lockers Info

Carcass – The carcass is the outer shell of the locker. It is usually manufactured from steel (unless a plastic locker) and powder coated in light grey. For many ranges the carcass is pre-drilled to allow for nesting (i.e. fixing the lockers together side by side). However, we do offer a range of Nested Lockers which are manufactured with less steel making them a cheaper and greener alternative.

Compartments – This refers to the actual number of doors each locker has, sometimes compartments are referred to as doors or tiers but they all mean the same thing. Most ranges of lockers are available in a single compartment (one door) or with 2, 3, 4 or 6 compartments. You can also select the width and depth of the compartments when making your locker choices. So, it is essential to bear in mind what you will be using the lockers for and the size of what you are planning to store in the compartments when purchasing.

Door Options – Whilst most lockers have steel doors in standard and heavy duty versions, you can also purchase lockers with laminated doors, perforated doors and Perspex doors.

Lock Options – As standard the majority of lockers are fitted with a cam lock (key lock). You can also request a Swivel Latch lock which is designed for use with a padlock, Combination lock which is a keyless system that requires a three digit code, or a Coin Return or Retain lock. These alternative locks are usually at an extra cost so please contact our Sales Team via Live Chat or phone for further details. Want more information about Locks take a look at our blog.

Fast Delivery Options – Most of our lockers are made to order but we do offer a range of lockers we keep in stock for when quick delivery is required. Our next day lockers and 5 day lockers are available in light grey, dark blue and red and in various sizing options.
